The History of Grog Squeezer®: The Marker That Changed Graffiti Writing

Born in 2005 from the obsession of a few Italian graffiti writers, the Squeezer® transformed artisanal mops into an efficient marker, setting a new standard and establishing itself as an icon.

Before the Squeezer®: the "shoe polish" era

In graffiti culture, before complete lines of dedicated markers existed, the rule was simple: do it yourself. The search for a "dirtier" and more impactful style went through homemade solutions: since the early '80s, the most ingenious writers created their own diy graffiti mops using empty shoe polish bottles refilled with all types of ink.

It was in this context that the shoepolish marker (or kiwi mop) spread: a rudimentary marker designed to create larger tags with a fuller stroke compared to classic felt-tip markers. Although the visual effect was interesting, the technical limitations were enormous. The sponge tip degraded quickly and, above all, the system was not leak-proof. Anyone who used these mops knew they would inevitably end up with clothes and hands stained with permanent ink.

Grog's intuition and the first prototypes

In 2005, Grog was born in Italy, a small company founded by a group of writers literally obsessed with tagging. The goal was clear: to create the ultimate tagging marker. The team began experimenting with various solutions, also using "Bingo markers" (or dabbers) as a base for the very first prototypes, filling them with their secret formula: Grog Buff Proof Ink™. This was the first real testing ground for understanding how to manage ink flow and improve the writing experience. However, bingo dabbers were not enough for the extreme needs of writing. A quality leap was needed: they had to design a tool from scratch that would guarantee maximum control over drips.

2005: the Grog Squeezer® is born

The Grog team decided to internalize the entire design and experimentation process. The result was the Grog Squeezer®, launched in 2005. The name itself, original and never used before in this industry, was immediately registered by the brand. The first model featured a 10mm tip and a body molded with a soft plastic material, designed to resist aggressive inks. This innovation finally allowed writers to decide exactly whether to create drips or not, by applying simple pressure to the marker. The very first units featured a black or silver body; later, the body became semi-transparent to allow users to see the content level at a glance, making it the most effective refillable graffiti marker ever.

Squeezer® design and imitation attempts

The design of the Squeezer® quickly became an unmistakable icon: an ergonomic body that narrows in the center, forming two "bellies" at the ends for an optimal grip, with the base featuring characteristic knurling. The impact on the market was so disruptive that this drip marker effectively created a new product genre. Success led to global distribution that drastically changed tagging styles, popularizing drip-heavy aesthetics all over the world.

Inevitably, clones arrived. Many brands in the industry, from small independent companies to large multinationals, tried to copy the concept. The most blatant example was the introduction of the "Dripstick" by Molotow, which shamelessly took the "two bellies" design conceived by Grog. Today, in common parlance, the terms squeezable marker or squeeze marker are often used to indicate any mop marker. It is a phenomenon similar to what happened with brands like Scotch, Thermos, or GoPro: the name of the original product becomes synonymous with the entire category. However, it is fundamental to remember that the authentic Squeezer® is exclusively Grog.

Squeezer®: The marker that changed global writing style

The introduction of the Squeezer® shifted the aesthetic axis of graffiti worldwide. Before 2005, the predominant style was "clean," dictated by chisel-tip markers. The Squeezer® instead legitimized the "dirty" style, made of long drips and bold strokes. Drips were no longer a technical error, but a precise stylistic choice. Grog gave writers the technical ability to tame the ink, deciding when and how much to let it run.

The innovation of Grog Flowtex™ and Stronghair™ tips

The true magic of every Squeezer® lies not only in the squeezable body but in the technology of the tips. Grog developed two main types to manage different flow densities. The Flowtex™ tips, made of synthetic fabric, guarantee an abundant flow with dense paints like Full Metal Paint™. The Stronghair™ tips, on the other hand, are a pioneering Grog invention: made of "hairy" mohair, they resist wear on rough surfaces and are optimized for very fluid inks like Buff Proof Ink™ or Street Killer Ink™.

Today, the family is vast: it starts with the Squeezer® 05, compact for tags in tight spaces, and moves to the pocket logic of the Grog Squeezer® Mini line—markers designed to be kept in a pocket discreetly. The classic format remains the Grog Squeezer® 10, the ultimate all-rounder. The range continues with the Squeezer® Mini 20 which offers a 20mm stroke in a pocket format, all the way up to the Grog Squeezer® 25 and the Squeezer® 25 FMP, the most precise and imposing evolution of the original pennarello mop.

2025: Squeezer® and Mercury Chrome Paint™, the ultimate mirror effect

In 2025, the concept of the drip marker reached a new technical peak thanks to integration with Mercury Chrome Paint™. Unlike traditional pump markers, where the flow is limited by the valve, the Grog Squeezer® acts as a performance multiplier for this specific paint. Mercury Chrome Paint™ requires a generous output to self-level and create a true mirror effect. Thanks to manual pressure management, the writer can saturate the tip exactly as much as needed to eliminate streaks and maximize brilliance. On wide lines and smooth surfaces, this combination allows for a uniform and incredibly reflective chrome stroke, pushing the potential of tagging beyond the limits of classic chisel markers.

The legacy of the Grog Squeezer® is written on walls and trains all over the world. From an intuition of Italian writers to a global standard, it remains the indispensable tool for those seeking the perfect flow and unmistakable drips, the result of twenty years of unstoppable innovation.
